Kevin Gerrone, a well known carnival historian has been chasing the sawdust his whole life, not only as a fan, but also as a show artist, author and historian. His banners have been seen by millions of people on carnival midways across the country, as well as on television and in film. He has interviewed some of the greatest show people of our time making it an obsession to preserve their history. Over the last 25 years he has spent a lot of time researching and making lifelong friends in Gibsonton, Florida, the show capital of the world where he is a member if the International Independent Showman’s Association. Though he is very interested in every aspect of the American carnival his main focus is on the old backend shows not only of the carnival but the circus as well. He debuted his first book Peter G. Hennen’s Hells Belles in 2018 and is about to release his second book on one of the last great showmen alive C.M. Christ.
In this presentation Kevin will talk about what many perceive to be the seedy backend of the carnival midway circa 1950’s and later. Not only what it was like to operate but also the creative process of framing a show as well as the comradery of what it was like living in Gibsonton. Plus, he will talk about his soon to be released book on C.M. Christ one of the last of the living old time showmen.
