Will have an overarching theme of inviting in puppeteer ancestors, and highlighting the rootlike networks between puppeteers, with special attention to groups and individuals that do not always get the shine they so deserve. GSW will MC the show with performances and projections in a mycelial (vast microscopic web) mode inviting in puppeteer ancestors as the “puppeteer family” is gathered together for a festival and encuentro. The variety program will include puppetry by Chinese Theatre Works, films by Jacqueline Wade, Nathan Leigh and Alexandra Zevin. Live music and other puppet acts TBD.
Great Small Works visual theater /puppetry collective was founded in NYC in 1995 to keep theater at the heart of social life. The company draws on puppet, avant-garde and popular theater traditions to tell contemporary stories. We perform in theaters, schools, parks, libraries, museums, prisons, street corners and other public spaces, producing work on many scales, from gigantic outdoor spectacles with scores of volunteers to miniature shows in living rooms. On any scale Great Small Works productions seek to renew, cultivate and strengthen the spirits of their audiences, believing in theater as a model for participating in democracy. Its members are John Bell, Trudi Cohen, Stephen Kaplin, Jenny Romaine, Roberto Rossi and Mark Sussman
